Young, Free and Homeowners...
Determination and a little assistance helped the young couple, Kim Price and Chris Wynne, defy the norm and own their first home in Warrington.
At the tender age of 22, Kim and Chris are very young compared to the average age of most UK first-time buyers, which is currently said to be 34.
Through their commitment to saving, help from McInerney Homes, and the bitter sweet sale of Chris’ family house, the couple have bought their dream home at Beaumont Grange in Warrington.
Kim says: "The impression we got from most people who just rent is that you get stuck in a rut because you can’t afford to save-up for a deposit as well. So we decided to stay at home and try to save instead."
To get manageable monthly mortgage payments most lenders ask first-time buyers for a deposit of 25%, which Kim rightly says, "Is a hell of a lot of money to get up front."
Undaunted, Kim and Chris saved-up for a year-and-a-half and began the search for their first home but then the tragic death of Chris’s father last year put everything on hold.
In the New Year Chris and family made the decision to sell his father’s home, which gave the couple a little bit more towards their deposit. The last piece of the jigsaw came from McInerney’s 5% deposit once the couple had discovered their dream home at Beaumont Grange.
Kim says: "We’d been searching for quite a while but had found nothing in the areas we were looking. I wanted a new build home because that’s what I live in at the moment and Chris wanted a three or two-and-a-half storey house. We’d viewed a number of new build homes but they were either far too small or too big and expensive."
Just a week after McInerney opened its new development, Beaumont Grange in Bewsey, Kim and Chris dropped in to view the plans. They liked the layout of McInerney’s four-bedroom, two-and-a-half-storey, Tarvin style home but because the development had only just opened there was no show home to see. Not to be discouraged the couple zoomed over to Runcorn to McInerney’s Evolution development where a Tarvin show home gave them a real insight.
"Chris liked it, which told us it was meant to be," says Kim. "It was absolutely perfect and just what we’d been looking for. As soon as we walked in we fell in love with it. We could see ourselves in the house for a good three or four years with room for children.
"McInerney was really helpful. We’re first time buyers and had no idea of what to do or where to start. They put us in touch with a financial adviser and if we had any questions we just rang the site. They would always try to help us, even if it wasn’t really in their job role, and the 5% towards our deposit was a great relief!"
The couple had searched for properties in Widnes and St Helens but Warrington was the preferred option. The town has a growing reputation as a place to live and work and plenty of ongoing investment. They were delighted with the location close to family and within 20 minutes of work for both Kim and Chris.
Kim added: "It’s been a tough few years for Chris and we both needed something positive to focus on. We’re really looking forward to the summer when we can move in."
Beaumont Grange will feature 62 homes including three and four-bedroom family homes. Located off Bewsey Road, the development is close to Warrington Hospital, Warrington Central Station and the town centre.
Prices start from £142,995 for a four-bedroom Tarvin or with McInerney’s First Step scheme a three-bedroom home is just £104,546.
