About Us
A history of sustained growth at home and abroad

McInerney was founded in 1909 by Thomas McInerney as a house building operation in Co. Clare in the West of Ireland. From here it expanded into neighbouring counties over the following decades. By the early 1940s it had established an office in Gort, County Galway, and become involved in a diversity projects, including building housing, schools and a number of other contracts.
In 1949 the company was incorporated as Thomas McInerney & Sons, with one of its first major projects being the new jet runway at Shannon airport. By the early 1950s this company was active nationally. Building had commenced in the capital, Dublin, with large local authority housing contracts and construction of specialist science buildings for University College Dublin.
In the mid 1950s, McInerney expanded into the UK market. It opened an office in Watford, just outside London, and went on to become a major local authority and private housing developer throughout the South of England.
It was here that it pioneered the timber framing housing technique, an approach now widely used throughout the UK and Ireland. It also developed joint venture housing concepts with housing associations in the UK — a first for the UK housing market.
By the late 1960s McInerney was active in every major population centre in Ireland as the first volume builder in the housing market. By this stage it was also involved in a number of commercial projects.
In 1971 McInerney Properties was formed and the company obtained a listing on the Dublin Stock Exchange. It was the largest ever-public flotation in Ireland at that time and was 11 times over subscribed.
In 1975 the company took advantage of the buoyant Middle Eastern and by the end of that decade it was operating successfully from offices in five Gulf states. The diverse range of projects undertaken in these markets included office blocks, local government housing, palaces and banks as well the construction of the Irish embassy in Saudi Arabia.
The company also saw growth potential in the leisure market in the Iberian peninsula at this time. It established a business here, then under the Four Seasons name and today known as Elanda, and developed a number of exclusive high quality country club resorts in Portugal and Marbella, Spain.

In 1989 the business evolved again into a new structure to reflect its expansion in different areas. Today, the McInerney Group is one of Ireland's leading construction companies, with divisions specialising in various aspects of the market.
